Each Way Betting Explained
Each way betting is one of the most popular bet types in horse racing. It gives you two chances to win from a single selection: your horse can either win the race outright or simply finish in one of the placing positions. This dual structure makes each way betting an attractive option for backing horses at longer odds where the full win might be unlikely but a top-3 or top-4 finish is realistic.
What is Each Way Betting?
An each way bet consists of two equal bets on the same horse: a win bet (horse finishes 1st) and a place bet (horse finishes in the top 2, 3, or 4 depending on the race). Because it is two bets, your total stake is double what you specify. If you place a 500 rupee each way bet, you are actually staking 1,000 rupees total (500 on win + 500 on place).
How Each Way Bets Work
The place part of an each way bet pays out at a fraction of the win odds. This fraction (called "place terms") varies depending on the number of runners and the type of race:
| Field Size | Place Positions Paid | Fraction of Win Odds |
|---|---|---|
| 5-7 runners | 1st and 2nd | 1/4 odds |
| 8-15 runners | 1st, 2nd, and 3rd | 1/5 odds |
| 16+ runners (non-handicap) | 1st, 2nd, and 3rd | 1/4 odds |
| 16+ runners (handicap) | 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th | 1/4 odds |
Each Way Payout Calculations
Let us work through a complete example:
Scenario: You place a 500 rupee each way bet on a horse at odds of 10.00 in a 12-runner race (1/5 odds, 3 places).
Total stake: 500 (win) + 500 (place) = 1,000 rupees
If the horse wins (1st place):
- Win part: 500 x 10.00 = 5,000 rupees
- Place part: 500 x (10.00 / 5) = 500 x 2.00 = 1,000 rupees
- Total return: 5,000 + 1,000 = 6,000 rupees (profit: 5,000)
If the horse places (2nd or 3rd):
- Win part: lost (500 rupees gone)
- Place part: 500 x 2.00 = 1,000 rupees
- Total return: 1,000 rupees (no profit, but you get your total stake back)
If the horse finishes 4th or worse:
- Both parts lose. Total loss: 1,000 rupees
At odds of 5.00 or higher with 1/4 place terms, an each way bet breaks even if the horse places (you get your total stake back through the place payout). At odds below 5.00, you actually lose money even if the horse places. This is why each way bets are most valuable at longer odds.
When to Use Each Way
- Horses at odds of 5.00 or higher. The longer the odds, the more valuable the place part becomes. At odds of 10.00+, the place part alone can deliver a meaningful payout.
- Large fields (12+ runners). More runners mean more placing positions, giving your horse a better chance of placing even if it does not win.
- Competitive races with no standout favourite. When the field is wide open and several horses have a genuine chance, each way betting provides a safety net.
- Horses with a strong history of placing. Some horses consistently finish in the top 3 without winning. These are ideal each way selections.
When to Avoid Each Way
- Short-priced favourites (odds below 3.00). The place part at such short odds provides almost no value. A straight win bet is more efficient.
- Small fields (fewer than 5 runners). Place betting is usually unavailable or limited to just 1st and 2nd, reducing the value of the each way structure.
- When you are confident in the win. If you strongly believe a horse will win, a straight win bet gives you a better return because you are not splitting your stake across two bets.
Each Way Strategies
The each way value finder
Look for horses whose place probability is higher than the place odds suggest. A horse at 12.00 with 1/4 place terms has place odds of 3.00 (implied place probability of 33%). If you assess the horse has a 40%+ chance of placing, there is value in the each way bet even if the horse is unlikely to win.
Large field handicaps
Handicap races with 16+ runners offer 4 placing positions at 1/4 odds. This is the most favourable each way structure. Look for horses in the 8.00 to 20.00 odds range that have shown consistent form and suit the going conditions.
Finding Each Way Value
The key to profitable each way betting is identifying horses whose place probability is higher than the place odds suggest. This requires comparing the bookmaker's implied place probability with your own assessment:
Step 1: Calculate the implied place probability from the odds. A horse at 10/1 with 1/4 place terms has place odds of 2.50 (10 divided by 4 = 2.50, plus 1 = 3.50 decimal for place). Implied place probability = 1/3.50 = 28.6%.
Step 2: Assess the horse's actual place probability. How often does this horse finish in the top 3 or 4? What is the quality of the field? Are conditions in the horse's favour? If your assessment gives the horse a 40%+ chance of placing, the each way bet has positive expected value.
Step 3: Check the field size. Each way value increases with field size because larger fields offer more placing positions and because longer odds create proportionally better place returns. The "sweet spot" for each way betting is 16+ runner handicap races with 1/4 place terms and 4 placing positions.
| Horse Odds | Place Terms | Place Odds | Break-Even Place % | Good Value If Place % Above |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5/1 | 1/4 | 1.25 + 1 = 2.25 | 44% | 50%+ |
| 8/1 | 1/4 | 2.00 + 1 = 3.00 | 33% | 40%+ |
| 10/1 | 1/4 | 2.50 + 1 = 3.50 | 29% | 35%+ |
| 16/1 | 1/4 | 4.00 + 1 = 5.00 | 20% | 25%+ |
| 25/1 | 1/4 | 6.25 + 1 = 7.25 | 14% | 18%+ |
Notice how the break-even place percentage drops significantly at longer odds. A 25/1 shot only needs to place 14% of the time (roughly 1 in 7 runs) for the each way place bet to be profitable. Many horses at these odds place more frequently than 14%, making them attractive each way propositions even if their win probability is low.
Each Way Betting Mistakes to Avoid
- Backing short-priced horses each way. At odds of 2/1 or less, the place part returns almost nothing. A straight win bet is more capital-efficient. Each way only makes sense at 4/1 or higher, and offers the best value at 8/1 and above.
- Ignoring the number of runners. Each way in a 5-runner race (only 1st and 2nd place) offers much less protection than each way in a 20-runner handicap (1st through 4th place). Always check how many runners are declared before placing each way bets.
- Not comparing place terms. Some platforms offer enhanced place terms (1/3 odds instead of 1/4, or extra places on specific races). These enhanced terms significantly improve the expected value of your each way bet. Always check for enhanced place offers before betting.
- Backing horses with no placing record. Some horses finish first or not at all. They have wins and finishes outside the top 4, but rarely place without winning. These horses are better suited to straight win bets than each way. Check the horse's record of 2nd and 3rd place finishes specifically.
- Staking too much on each way bets. Remember that each way is TWO bets. A 500 rupee each way bet costs 1,000 rupees total. Budget accordingly and do not be caught out by the doubled stake.
